Now that there’s a movie being made of Alan Moore’s Seminal work, Watchmen , I figured it was time to give it a read.
I mean, its a classic, one of the most touted graphic novels in the English language.
But I haven’t read graphic novels since a junior high fascination with Elfquest.
And truthfully, Naoto’s opinion of graphic novels is colored by his cultural snobbishness towards “manga”. (so I was a little hesitant to let him see me reading it, as I knew ribbing would commence)
However, it was well worth reading. All 479 commenters on amazon are not wrong. It is a dark, disturbing look at what power is, and how it should be used, and the disturbing reasons people involve themselves with crime and vigilanteism, and the wounds we deal to eachother. The story is about a group of masked vigilantes in the US under Nixon, (only one of whom actually has special “powers”) who are being stalked and murdered one by one.
This is not a children’s comic. There’s alot of disturbing images in this novel, and I would not suggest it for anyone under 18 years of age.
That said, I would also not recommend it for people unready for some darkness and paranoia in their lives.
