The Lake House by Sarah Beth Durst

I enjoyed Durst’s fantasy Queen series and Race the Sands, so despite YA horror not being one of my main genres, I knew I could trust myself in Durst’s capable hands.

Trust.

Durst’s signature emotional character development is all based on trust. Three girls, all underestimated and not trusted to make decisions about themselves are sent to a summer camp by a Lake– only when they arrive horror occurs.

I can’t really talk about the plot much without major spoilers. Main POV Claire instantly thinks of worst case scenarios and fears everything. Her whole life friends have laughed at her paranoid anxiety– but the girls she meets at Lake House aren’t laughing or telling her to calm down. They trust that she instincts will save them.

There is survival catching of fish, catching rainwater in cups, sleeping with lookouts, knives, a gun and another unlooked for horror at the center of it all. It was exciting from the get go and watching these girls trust each other and prop each other up even when a boy comes between them– magical.

Please, please make this a movie! It would be so fun!

Fans of Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood and Brenna Yovanoff will enjoy this, for sure.
